Patience is the key to sustainable horse development

A common misconception I hear often is that starting young horses early, muscling them around, or putting them in the arena before they’re ready, is the best way to develop them. But this way of thinking can actually be quite flawed.

The real key isn’t rushing the process. It’s about taking the time to build a strong, trusting partnership with your horse, giving them space to understand their job and develop confidence at the right pace. Patience, proper preparation, and consistent, thoughtful work set up not just a successful ride, but a long-lasting, happy partnership.

Why push a green horse into stressful situations before they’ve had a chance to understand their role? That unnecessary stress can create problems that carry over into their future rides. Why create hurdles when a calm, structured approach makes everything easier for both of you?

Many horses who start later and are properly prepared often arrive at the higher levels around the same time as those who began young. Being “ahead” early doesn’t mean they’re more finished, often, they’re more balanced and relaxed because they’ve matured naturally.

Sure, some talented young horses seem to take to the work effortlessly. But remember, even those horses need time—time to physically and mentally mature, to develop good feeling, and to build strength. They’re the exception, not the rule. Rushing these horses often results in tension, imbalance, and even injury later down the line.

Let’s flip the narrative. Instead of pushing for short-term progress, let’s invest in the long game. Let’s make smarter choices that benefit the horse and rider, whether that’s a sound, relaxed horse well into old age, or a confident partner who genuinely enjoys their journey.

Because at the end of the day, quality matters far more than speed. The longevity of our sport and the wellbeing of our horses depend on us making thoughtful, deliberate choices. Let’s focus on creating something great—step by step, with patience and purpose ✌️.
